A revision to the GSAH curriculum in Fall 2021 allows for more flexibility and access to the core courses and reduces the number of required core courses and increases the number of electives (affiliated courses) for the major and the minor.

STUDENTS TAKE 15 CREDITS IN CORE COURSES ALONG WITH 18 CREDITS OF ELECTIVE COURSES TO COMPLETE THE GSAH MAJOR; OR THEY CAN TAKE 6 CREDITS OF CORE COURSES AND 9 CREDITS OF ELECTIVE COURSES TO COMPLETE THE GSAH MINOR.

Listed below are the revised course titles, descriptions and prerequisites for the GSAH curriculum starting in the Fall 2021 term.

GSAH 201, “Issues in Global Studies”

Major issues in global studies. Key interdisciplinary terms and concepts for understanding global themes and contexts. No prerequisite.

GSAH 301, “Global Citizenship”

What does it mean to be a global citizen? The idea of global citizenship with emphasis on the theories and practices that have provided the basis for an emergent “ethos of care for the world” in the 21st century. No prerequisite.

GSAH 310, “Questions of Justice in Global Contexts” 

Global justice, international law, and global ethics in various contexts with emphasis on art and humanities engagements on topics such as distributive justice, environmental justice, transitional justice, restorative justice, and/or human rights. No prerequisite.

GSAH 311, “Global Perspectives on Borders and Migration” 

The causes and motives, identities and relationships, transformations and traditions of people moving across geographic boundaries (local, regional, and national), and their effect on local and global conditions, focusing on creative, philosophical, and historical explorations. No prerequisite.

GSAH 312, “Global Digital Cultures”

The transformative effects of digital media and communication on cultural exchange and creativity in global contexts. Ethical and social questions concerning the use and circulation of digital media and communications in various regional, national, and transnational contexts. No prerequisite.

GSAH 313, “Violence and Power in Global Contexts” 

Issues and questions of violence in global contexts, especially as they have been addressed in the humanities. Analysis of the relationships between violence, power, and resistance. No prerequisite.

GSAH 314, “Race, Gender, and Global Identities” 

Explorations of diversity and identities in global contexts. Analysis of difference at the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, and inequality within a global studies framework. No prerequisite.

GSAH 315, “Globalization and the Arts”

How has globalization effected the creative and performing arts? How have the arts represented and responded to global transformations? Emphasis on the various traditional and contemporary modes of artistic activity in various regional, national, and transnational contexts. No prerequisite.

GSAH 391, “Special Topics in Global Studies”

Special topics supplementing regular course offerings. No prerequisite.

GSAH 450 (W), “Global Interdisciplinary Studies”

Interdisciplinary senior capstone seminar focusing on a global studies research project. Prerequisite:  GSAH 201

GSAH 490, “Independent Study” (1-4 credits)

Allows for special projects arranged by an individual student and a faculty member in areas supplementing regular course offerings. No prerequisite.
