As we welcome 2023, we are especially aware of how interconnected we are today, and how local events can have a global reach. VIPP’s 2023 Global Virtual Winter School kicked-off a timely new course for the semester: Social Media for Social Change. This course invites students to explore the relationships between social media and social movements in global contexts and how technology has changed the way people mobilize around current events. Students from the Communication University of China, Zhejiang University, and Jimei University joined this unique virtual course, taught by Dr. Salah D. Hassan, Director of Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities Program at Michigan State University, and Dr. Ivan Maksymyk of the HEC Montréal Department of Information Technology. Since the pandemic, VIPP has run five Virtual Winter and Summer Schools attended by over 260 students from 30 universities and 10 countries, providing a meaningful educational and exchange experience for students who are unable to travel to MSU!
