Course Description

In this course, we focus on what it means to be a global citizen and engage with local communities. The course explores the idea of global citizenship with emphasis on the theories and practices that have provided the basis for addressing emergent problems and issues in the 21st century. It will focus on questions of cultural diversity and identity; globalization and interdependence; social justice and action; and linking local to global. Course activities will include interactions and community service work with local community organizers and MSU outreach and engagement experts. Class discussion and activities will engage global issues such as climate change, gender equity, immigration, fair trade, world hunger, and human rights. As part of a community engagement model, students will also volunteer and work on community-based projects. The course satisfies the College of Arts and Letters Experiential Learning Requirement.
